Regarding the perception of hue, two principles are basic: 1. Similar hues appear more like complements when juxtaposed, and 2. Gray takes on the appearance of the complement of its background. Recalling that complementary combinations are especially dynamic, similar colors can be given a more or less dynamic interaction by moving them closer together or farther apart, and any color appears more dynamic when it is displayed against a background of gray.
